Clément Turpin and François Letexier will be the two French referees at the World Cup, which runs from 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Mexico and Canada. According to L'Équipe, they were named the world’s best referees in 2025 and 2024 respectively.
Turpin heads to a third finals, while Letexier will experience his first. At 44, Turpin could yet become the first French official to appear at four World Cups.
Turpin handled two matches in 2018 and three in 2022, including Brazil 4-1 South Korea in the round of 16. His marquee appointments include the 2022 Champions League final, Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool.
Alongside assistants Nicolas Danos and Benjamin Pagès, Turpin says he arrives far more natural than in 2018, a mature and measured version of himself.
Letexier, 37, was named the world’s best in 2024 and second in 2025. He refereed the Euro 2024 final, Spain 2-1 England, the 2026 Europa League final, Aston Villa 3-0 Freiburg, and four Champions League quarter-finals.
The Breton from Bédée, a former court bailiff, sees this first World Cup as near a referee’s pinnacle and, with assistants Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni, stresses enjoyment and performance after overreaching at the 2023 U20 World Cup in Argentina.
French VARs Jérôme Brisard and Willy Delajod will also be involved, Delajod replacing Dutch official Rob Dieperink, who was removed by FIFA after his arrest in a sexual assault investigation. They join the two referees and four assistants on tournament duty.
