Club América enjoyed a dominant spell between 2023-2024 under André Jardine, but have this week decided to release the Brazilian manager from his duties.

The announcement comes within a week of the Clausura finale, which saw city-rivals Cruz Azul defeat fellow Mexico City outfit Pumas to win a 10th Liga MX title.

As for Club América, their campaign ended after a nail-biting double header against Pumas in the quarter-final, which may have ended differently had Henry Martín managed to convert his last-minute penalty.

The club’s exit from the Clausura brought to an end a disappointing season for Las Águilas, who also crashed out of the Apertura playoffs at the same stage, losing to Monterrey.

André Jardine’s success with América

Jardine joined Mexico’s most decorated side back in the summer of 2023 after 18 months with Atlético San Luis, where he managed to guide the club to two Liguilla competitions from three attempts.

He hit the ground running the minute he joined América, taking them to the top of the table before beating Tigres in the 2023 Apertura final to return to the summit of Mexican football after five years away.

Six months later, he did it again. Becoming only the fourth team in Liga MX history to win back-to-back titles (after Pumas, León and Atlas) with a narrow victory over Cruz Azul.

In December 2024, André Jardine etched his name into Mexican football history even more by becoming the first manager ever to win three straight league titles after leading his team to victory over CF Monterrey.

An unthinkable fourth-straight league title was on the cards until they met a young, fresh Toluca side, guided by serial Liga MX champion, Antonio Mohamed, who put an end to América’s dominance under Jardine.

What follows for Club América?

Club América will be hoping to announce Jardine’s successor as soon as possible, in order to prepare for the fast-approaching Leagues Cup, and many reports suggest the club have their eye on one man.

TUDN and Claro Sports are amongst the frontrunners leading the narrative that Guillermo Almada will become the new manager.

Almada, 56, is no stranger to Mexican football, having previously managed Santos Laguna and Pachuca.

While he could only manage a runner-up medal with Los Guerreros during the 2021 Clausura, Almada did bring glory to Pachuca, lifting the 2022 Apertura title before taking the club onto win a sixth Concacaf Champions Cup title in 2024.

There has been no official confirmation of Almada’s move to Club América, although reports indicate that preliminary talks have taken place.
