A manager of an overseas club has opened up on his failed attempt to complete the summer signing of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes rejected chance to leave United

Earlier this summer, Fernandes turned down the chance to permanently depart United for an incredibly lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.

Fernandes was by far United’s best player during an extremely poor 2024/25 season in which the club finished in 15th place, having suffered 18 top-flight defeats.

The skipper registered 19 goals and as many assists across all competitions on his way to winning the club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards.

Al-Hilal identified Fernandes as their ideal marquee target ahead of the involvement in the Club World Cup. Al-Hilal offered the midfielder an eye-watering three-year deal worth £200m in wages. They were also prepared to table a bid in excess of £100m for the player.

United left the choice about his future to Fernandes, and after careful consideration, he selflessly opted to remain with the club instead of abandoning them at their lowest ebb.

A week ago, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Al-Nassr head coach Jorge Jesus wants to reunite Fernandes with Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

It was stated that money would not be a problem for Al Nassr if Fernandes demonstrated a willingness to join them.

However, the 30-year-old’s resolve to stay at United appears unshakable, with Jesus disclosing that Fernandes turned down their approach.

Jesus speaks on failed Fernandes transfer swoop

Speaking to Sport Informa [as quoted by SportsMole], Jesus said, “I wanted to [sign him], but Bruno is determined to stay.”

“We already talked last year. This year I knew he had made the decision to continue with [Ruben] Amorim.”

He added, “He’s in a league that they say is the best in the world, but I don’t agree. For me, it’s the Spanish league.”

Fernandes and United are back in action on Saturday when they host Fiorentina at Old Trafford for their final pre-season fixture.
