Napoli are reportedly keen to lock down Scott McTominay with a new and improved contract to ward off his suitors, but the player is still hoping for a second chapter at Manchester United.

The Lancaster native is an academy product of the Red Devils, who became a member of the first team in 2017. However, the club decided to part ways with him in the summer of 2024, selling him to the southern Italian giants for circa £24 million.

After guiding Napoli towards their fourth league title last season while winning the Serie A MVP Award, McTominay cemented himself as a ‘club icon’.

Scott McTominay opens contract talks with Napoli

This season, Napoli have been struggling on the collective level, with a plethora of injuries impeding their title defence. Nevertheless, Antonio Conte has at least been able to rely on McTominay for inspiration. The midfielder has already produced 10 goals and four assists across all competitions this season, including some screamers.

McTominay’s exploits in Italy have intrigued Man Utd, who are reportedly interested in bringing the player back to Old Trafford as part of their incoming midfield overhaul.

But according to TuttoMercatoWeb, Napoli are sensing the danger, so they’re looking to ward off all suitors by tying the midfielder down with a contract extension until June 2030, which also includes a pay rise.

The Italian portal claims that the player’s agent, Colin Murdock, has already arrived in Naples to open the dialogue with the reigning Italian champions.

Why an imminent Man Utd return remains unlikely for McTominay

As the source explains, McTominay is enjoying life in the Italian peninsula as well as his superstar status among Napoli supporters.

However, the 29-year-old still dreams about returning to Man Utd at some point in his career, as he feels he still has some unfinished business at the club.

McTominay was a beloved and respected figure at Carrington, but since his move to Napoli, he has taken his game to a whole new level, so perhaps he’s feeling the urge to showcase his current form at Old Trafford.

While a return remains possible in the future, it appears that the Scotland international is destined to linger at the Stadio Maradona for at least another campaign, while Man Utd’s primary midfield targets are mostly young Premier League up-and-comers, the likes of Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, and Carlos Baleba.
