Manuel Neuer’s future at FC Bayern remains open – and despite his recent gala performance against Real Madrid, the 40-year-old was once again in world-class form in the 2-1 win at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, but a decision on his future remains to be made

Kroth explained to BILD: „No decision has been made about Manuel’s future at the moment. He wants to listen to his body for a little longer. The club knows, both sides are relaxed and feel no time pressure.“

These statements clearly underline the current situation. Both player and club are pursuing a calm, coordinated process, in which the focus is primarily on Neuer’s physical condition. After minor injuries over the course of the season, the goalkeeper wants to ensure that he can continue to meet the high demands

He demonstrated his ability to do so impressively in Madrid recently, making several strong saves to keep Bayern in the game and proving once again that he can still perform at the absolute top level at the age of 40

Urbig as successor – Bayern remain prepared

At the same time, Munich have long since made provisions. Should Neuer actually end his career in the summer, Jonas Urbig is considered the most likely successor in the Bayern goal. The young keeper has already been able to collect appearances in the past and has also been trusted under Vincent Kompany

This perspective also contributes to the fact that those responsible can remain relaxed, as the club sees itself in a good position – regardless of what Neuer ultimately decides

Another factor also plays into the Bayern captain’s hands: participation in the World Cup is no longer an issue, which would give Neuer the opportunity to regenerate in the summer and prepare optimally for the coming season should he extend his contract
