Eray Cömert has been named in Switzerland’s list for the 2026 World Cup, staged in Canada, the United States and Mexico from 11 June to 19 July. The Valencia defender’s contract expires on 30 June, leaving his future unresolved as the tournament begins.
He is suspended for the final league game at Mestalla against Barcelona. That means, unless Valencia renew him, his last outing was against Rayo Vallecano, when he was sent off. According to Superdeporte, that could prove his farewell appearance.
Cömert wants his future settled before the World Cup. His representatives have been in Valencia in recent weeks, yet no decision has been made. He can depart on a free this summer and two Bundesliga clubs are queueing to sign him.
The centre-back began as fourth choice but earned significant minutes during one stretch. Valencia have considered renewing him, though talks are currently on hold due to the club’s situation.
This would be his second World Cup after Qatar 2022. He also has experience with his national team from European Championship qualifying and the UEFA Nations League. Switzerland are in Group B with Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada, and open on 13 June at 21:00.
He may be Valencia’s only representative. Guido is in Argentina’s provisional list but his inclusion is far from certain, while Cenk’s chances with Türkiye are also in doubt. Under FIFA rules, Valencia will receive payments for him until 30 June, with any sums from 1 July going to any new club.
