As reported by Gianluigi Longari, Como are interested in a move for Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.
The Lariani are looking to prepare as well as they can ahead of a massive season during which they’ll be expected to not only challenge for the top spots in Serie A, but also make it out of the league phase in their debut Champions League campaign, having registered a fourth-placed finish in the league last season under sensational circumstances.
Chalobah, meanwhile, featured regularly for the Blues last season, making 47 appearances, but is widely considered a player they could consider letting go in favour of a more high-profile name, especially since, being a Cobham graduate, the revenue generated from his sale would count as “pure” profit. Chelsea do need to be wary of their FFP reality as they aim to build their squad ahead of Xabi Alonso’s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.
Valued by Transfermarkt at €40 million, Chalobah has two more years remaining on his £50k-a-week Chelsea contract, and while the club publicly maintain he is not for sale, interest in an academy graduate from a Champions League club may make them reconsider.
English players have, in recent years, demonstrated that moving to Italy for more game time is a viable option. Chalobah need only look at fellow Cobham graduate Fikayo Tomori.
At 26, Chalobah is not only amply experienced, he is also incredibly versatile, capable of playing centrally in defence in both back-four and back-three setups as well as more than able to operate at right-back and in midfield. A Swiss army knife of a defender, he would come very handy, especially during the type of campaign Como are about to embark on, and even more so in Cesc Fàbregas’ fluid tactical setup.
The €40m valuation may take some addressing, but apart from that there’s a deal here to be made that could work out for all parties.
