A health issue affecting Jorge Messi, father of Lionel Messi, has prompted concern in Argentina during the 2026 World Cup. The Messi family said in a statement that he is under medical supervision, recovering and progressing well within his current condition.
The family voiced dismay at false rumours of Jorge Messi’s death circulating in Argentinian media and on social networks. They criticised a lack of sensitivity, respect and scruples over a private family matter.
They urged responsibility, prudence and humanity, adding that any information not issued through the family’s own channels should not be treated as valid. They said a person’s health, and the calm of those around them, should not be subject to speculation or irresponsible interest.
After Argentina’s 3-0 win over Algeria in their World Cup opener on Tuesday, Messi was asked about his tears after celebrating the first of his three goals. He said he was dealing with an issue entirely unrelated to football.
He added that he had endured difficult days and thanked the delegation and his team-mates for their support. With his hat-trick, the Inter Miami forward drew level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the leading World Cup scorer on 16 goals.
Messi has not commented further on the matter since.
