Manchester City face Fulham in the Premier League at Craven Cottage on Tuesday evening as they embark upon a testing fixture schedule ahead of Christmas.
The Blues returned to winning ways at the weekend as Phil Foden was again the saviour for his club, scoring in the first and last minute of a 3-2 victory over Leeds United to pull Manchester City within five points of league leaders Arsenal.
City have lost twice since the return of club football after the recent international break and Pep Guardiola’s men nearly gave away a third result in a week against Leeds – only for Foden to take matters into his own hands and keep his side in the title race.
Meanwhile, Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea’s 10-men at Stamford Bridge on Sunday – a result that will boost confidence among all at the Etihad Stadium – but City have their own concerns to dwell on as they look to win major trophies this term.
Guardiola remains without Ballon d’Or-winning Rodri and Mateo Kovacic for Fulham, with the the City manager confirming Tuesday’s trip to west London comes too soon for the former, who is back in training after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained in October.
Kovacic underwent surgery on his heel last month and is expected to remain on the treatment table till the spring of 2026, with Nico Gonzalez set to hold down the fort in midfield for a Manchester City side worryingly lacking depth in the number six area.
Manchester City played their strongest XI against Leeds United after Guardiola received heavy criticism for making 10 changes to his lineup for a 2-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League.
City need to put a run of wins together to get some momentum behind him as they enter a busy winter amid doubts over how far a new-look dressing room – that is at a nascent stage of their transition under sporting director Hugo Viana – can push Arsenal in the title race.
