Manchester City face Brighton and Hove Albion in a must-win Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Blues suffered a second consecutive draw in as many games to start 2026 on Sunday as Enzo Fernandez’s 94th minute leveller saw Chelsea salvage a 1-1 draw against Pep Guardiola’s title-chasing men.
City enter the midweek round of fixtures six points adrift of the league leaders, who face a monumental battle with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday evening in the backdrop of triumphs over Aston Villa and Bournemouth.
Guardiola and co can ill-afford many more slip-ups in the title race as they vie for a fifth Premier League crown in six seasons, though the jury remains out on whether City can sustain their purple patch of the last quarter of 2025 and challenge Arsenal all the way.
Antoine Semenyo is expected to complete a £65 million transfer to the Etihad Stadium at the weekend, with the Bournemouth man scheduled to undergo his Manchester City medical on Thursday ahead of the switch.
City have also entered the bidding for Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi in the wake of concerning injuries to centre-half pairing Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias last week, with the club since recalling academy graduate Max Alleyne from loan at Watford.
Gvardiol is expected to be out for four to five months after suffering a tibial fracture in his right leg, with Dias set for four to six weeks on the sidelines as he recovers from a hamstring injury.
John Stones, Oscar Bobb and Mateo Kovacic remain out of contention for City, with Nico Gonzalez deemed ‘fine’ by Guardiola in a press conference on Tuesday after the 23-year-old missed the draw against Chelsea, which saw Ballon d’Or winner Rodri mark his first start in three months for the Blues.
