City slipped to third in the Premier League table last week as Harvey Barnes’ brace sealed a controversial yet deserved win for Eddie Howe’s men at St. James’ Park to hamper City’s early title prospects.

Arsenal took full advantage of the result on Tyneside as they swept local rivals Tottenham Hotspur away in an emphatic 4-1 triumph in the North London derby.

Pep Guardiola would later receive significant criticism for making 10 changes in midweek as Manchester City fell to a 0-2 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, adding a very unnecessary risk to their hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 directly.

Manchester City were expected to field a much-changed starting XI against Leeds United on Saturday afternoon, with Rodri and Mateo Kovacic remaining out of contention as the former makes his way back to full fitness after recovering from a hamstring injury.

Kovacic underwent surgery on his heel earlier this month and having recently returned to the club’s facilities, the Croatia international is expected to remain on the sidelines until the spring of 2026.

Manchester City cannot afford many more slip-ups in the early stages of the title race if they are serious about fighting league leaders Arsenal tooth and nail deeper into the campaign, having suffered their fourth league loss of the season last week.
