Manchester City’s reported transfer interest in FC Porto goalkeeper, Diogo Costa has now been confirmed by reliable quarters of the English media.
The 25-year-old has been a long-standing name in media reports over the last few months connected with Manchester City and their plans for the upcoming summer transfer window – a market many believe to be an opportunity for a ‘rebuild’ at the Etihad Stadium.
Hugo Viana is set to take on the role of sporting director on a full-time basis this summer when he permanently replaces Txiki Begiristain, with the pair currently working alongside one another to smoothen the transition process in the coming weeks and months.
And while the attacking midfield position will likely take up a significant portion of budget given Kevin De Bruyne’s exit after 10 illustrious years at the club, a number of other positions will be at the forefront of thinking and plans.
Among them is the goalkeeper role, with the current understanding being that Ederson is eyeing an exit from the Etihad Stadium and is keen on his next destination being Saudi Arabia at the tail-end of his career.
Now, according to the information of Sky Sports News journalist Lyall Thomas, officials at Manchester City are interested in FC Porto and Portugal international goalkeeper Diogo Costa this summer.
It is explained that the goalkeeper position is one area of the pitch that Manchester City are looking to strengthen during the upcoming summer market, regardless of any uncertainty over the future of current number one Ederson.
On the subject of Costa, it is further pointed out that the 25-year-old is also of interest to a number of clubs across Europe ahead of the summer window and is considered among the continents best goalkeepers at present.
While conversation around Ederson’s Manchester City future will no doubt dominate headlines leading up to the summer, there also remains uncertainty over the future of his back-up at the club, Stefan Ortega Moreno.
The Germany international has long held ambitions of becoming the club’s new number one and while such a possibility appears unlikely with Ederson at the club and plans around a direct replacement, a move for the former Arminia Bielefeld man could be on the cards.
There is known to have been transfer interest in the 32-year-old from Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest in the past, while Bayer Leverkusen are believed to have included the German on a shortlist of potential goalkeeping options ahead of the new season.
