Discontent amongst supporters
I understand that the disappointment regarding any result goes against the coach, and that's part of our profession -just like our own decisions are sometimes more understandable than others.
Substitution of Lucas Beltrán
In those final minutes we wanted to have two strikers on the pitch Beltrán's level of fatigue also made it necessary, because he put in a tremendous effort and had a fantastic game. We tried to take advantage of other resources we have, such as Ramazani, who can also go down the wing and give us two strikers. Hugo Duro is the top scorer, and we always hope that any ball the team could get into the box, that the team could put away -especially with Thierry's introduction- would give us the hope of getting a point.
Changing the Dynamic
We can do it with a lot of energy, and I see the team competing and giving their all. The players have a mentality that is certainly very committed, and it is my responsibility to turn the situation around. I understand the criticism perfectly, and I am ultimately responsible. Because I understand it, I take responsibility and am trying to change the team's dynamic.
I say that I have all the strength in the world, all the energy to try to reverse this dynamic, and that is what I feel. I reiterate: I have energy and I have the responsibility to change the team's dynamic. I know that we are coming off three consecutive defeats, one of them being elimination from the Copa del Rey, and it is a tough, demanding time. I am aware of this.
The changes in the second half
The team gave the impression at all times that we were playing well. We were limited by the minutes Thierry could play because switching to a back four depended, for me, on having a right-back free, as was the case with Thierry. We were considering the right moment to do that, because taking an unnecessary risk right now would harm the team in the long run. Without Foulquier, who will be out for a while, and without Iranzo, we only have Thierry as an option, and I had to be conservative to ensure the team have a right-back available for the following week.
There were times when the team were playing well; we just needed to extend our attacks, and there were times when we were defending.
Real Madrid's first goal
I believe the referee should have stopped play when Carreras stiff-armed Hugo Duro during a long throw-in from Dimitrevsky, and the referee didn't see it as a foul. He let play continue, and they got the goal at a time when we took a step back -but the team always felt like they were competing in the game. The substitutions were related to fitness and finding alternatives.
Substituting Beltrán was tough, substituting Hugo Duro was tough, bringing on Sadiq on was a necessity, and the only alternative was to move Beltrán to play as a winger at that moment. I also trust other players like Ramazani and Diego, who could give us energy to go up and down the flank. I think Ramazani contributed in the minutes he played, but unfortunately, we weren't able to equalise. Then we were hit on a counter-attack: When you're going for the win, you know Real Madrid can strike and score the second goal, and that's what happened.
I think that right now the team need to demand results. I don't agree that the team lack identity. Against Real Betis, we had a fantastic match, in which there were decisive moments. Against Athletic Club, we were good in the first half, and when they managed to equalise in the second half, the team fought until the end. We couldn't capitalise in those final minutes. Today, against Real Madrid, coming off a midweek game, the team competed well, and despite the difficulty of not having a right-back, the team were committed, the team worked hard, and you can see a team that's alive. It's true that we're lacking results, and results are always the coach's ultimate responsibility. My family always instilled in me that you have to fight, to face demanding situations with maximum responsibility, and that's what I do every day. I believe the team will find solutions and improve results; I have no doubt about it. After seeing a match like today's, I'm even more convinced.
The diagnosis involves improving in every way we can, adjusting everything we can so that within a week we can achieve a positive result, which is what we all want.
