Corinthians boast strong record in Campeonato Paulista quarter-finals

Next Sunday (22), at 8:30 PM (Brasília time), Corinthians will face Portuguesa at the Canindé Stadium in a quarter-final match of the 2026 Paulista Championship. In the first phase, the club from Parque São Jorge qualified with the fifth-best campaign, totaling 14 points in eight rounds (four wins, two draws, and two losses – 10 goals scored and six conceded).

In the match, Corinthians will seek to maintain its positive record in state quarter-finals, which began being contested from 2011. Previously, the knockout stage started directly in the semi-finals. Since then, out of the 14 times they played this stage of the competition, they only failed to advance to the semi-finals on two occasions: 2012 and 2023.

In the first year, they were eliminated from the Paulista Championship after being defeated by Ponte Preta at Pacaembu, with a score of 3 x 2. However, that year, the Alvinegro ended up being the champion of the Libertadores and the Club World Cup, against Boca Juniors from Argentina and Chelsea from England. On the second occasion, they were eliminated in Itaquera by Ituano, in a penalty shootout, losing 7 x 6.

Considering this period, Corinthians also missed out on the knockout stage only in 2014 and 2024. In the first instance, they finished third in Group B with 24 points, four less than the second-placed Ituano, who had 28, as did the group leader, Botafogo-SP. In the second time, they only scored 14 points in Group C of the state championship, three behind Inter de Limeira, which ended up being the second in the group. The leader at the time was RB Bragantino, with 21 points.

Despite these setbacks, the record is positive, out of the 13 times they played the quarter-finals of the Paulista Championship, they advanced in 11 of them, the last being by defeating Mirassol 2 x 0 at Neo Química Arena, with goals from forwards Ángel Romero and Memphis Depay. It is worth noting that the Alvinegro is the current and greatest state champion with 31 titles – the last one won against their arch-rival Palmeiras.
