Corinthians defender parades Supercopa trophy at Paulistão half-time

On the night of this Thursday (5th), Corinthians hosts Capivariano at the Neo Química Arena for the sixth round of the first phase of the Campeonato Paulista. Currently, the Alvinegro sits in seventh place with eight points (two wins, two draws, and one loss – six goals scored and five conceded). Only the top eight teams qualify for the knockout stage.

During halftime, defender Gabriel Paulista, who was rested for the match, went onto the Itaquera pitch to display the Supercopa do Brasil trophy, won last Sunday (1st) after Corinthians’ 2-0 victory over Flamengo at the Mané Garrincha Stadium in Brasília. Wearing number 3, he scored the first goal of the match early on, after an assist from defender Gustavo Henrique.

This was Corinthians’ second title in the history of the competition. In January 1991, the club from Parque São Jorge defeated the same opponent at Morumbi Stadium with a goal from former midfielder Neto. A Corinthians fan at heart, Gabriel Paulista joined Alvinegro at the start of this season, signing a contract until December 2027 to strengthen the defense, which currently includes: Gustavo Henrique, André Ramalho, João Pedro Tchoca, and Cacá.

Discovered at Taboão da Serra, he rose to prominence as a professional playing for Vitória and, in 2013, moved to Villarreal in Spain, where he stayed for one season before transferring to Arsenal in England. In the 2017/2018 season, he left the London club and was sold to Valencia. He remained there until the middle of the 2023/2024 season, when he moved to Atlético de Madrid in Spain.

At Besiktas in Turkey, he played for two seasons. His contract was set to end in 2027, but he terminated it early to sign with Corinthians for two years. The expectation is that the defender will be a starter in Corinthians’ next match of the season. Next Sunday (8th), at 8:30 pm (Brasília time), Alvinegro will face Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena for the seventh and penultimate round of the first phase of the state championship.
