Corinthians defender savours form, targets G7 in Brasileirão run-in

Corinthians hosted Grêmio at the Neo Química Arena last Sunday afternoon (2), in a match valid for the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship and triumphed 2-0. The result placed the Alvinegro in tenth position with 42 points (11 wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 34 goals scored and 35 conceded).

Scorer of one of the goals in the victory, still in the first half – after a corner kick taken by Rodrigo Garro – defender Gustavo Henrique spoke to the press in the mixed zone and talked about the goal, highlighting the team's strength in set pieces. In the current season, the number 13 has three goals, all headers – against Vasco and Grêmio in the Brasileirão, and Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil.

“Every game we study our opponent a lot, we see the points we can exploit. Earlier I had already headed a ball that was dangerous, right? And then there was another ball that I managed to score and I was very happy. We played a good game and that's it,” he began.

Later, he talked about his individual moment and the defensive solidity of Corinthians, since the team has not conceded a goal in the last three matches (Atlético-MG – H; Vitória – A; and Grêmio – H). This mark had not been achieved since May, when the team was already under coach Dorival Júnior.

“I'm very happy, it's a very good moment, personally I work hard for this. I think every game has its own story, I go in to do my best every game, always keeping my feet on the ground, always working hard so that in whatever way I can help, I will do my best to help Corinthians.”

“I think that's the main point, it's not just the four at the back, I feel from the back that everyone marks, I think everyone has to defend. It's a team where we really hammer home the point that everyone has to play, everyone has to defend. I think that's how you make a winning team, a champion team. And it's very important when we don't concede goals, because we know the quality we have with the ball at our feet and our offensive power. So the more games we can defend and not concede, the greater our chances of winning,” he continued.

Finally, the 32-year-old defender commented on his expectations for the final stretch of the Brazilian Championship. After facing Red Bull Bragantino away from home in the 32nd round this Wednesday (5), Alvinegro will face Ceará and São Paulo at home. Both teams are close to the Parque São Jorge club in the standings.

Gustavo Henrique is aiming for at least the G7, a position currently occupied by Fluminense, who have 47 points, five more than Corinthians.

“Our priority will always be the next game, the next game we have to play to win, we’re playing against an opponent that demands that. It’s going to be a very tough game (against RB Bragantino), where the opponent really needs a result. And, as I said, it’s another final we have so that, afterwards, at home, with consecutive home games, we can consolidate this phase and qualify ourselves for this fight for the G7,” he concluded.

Since his arrival at Corinthians at the beginning of 2024, Gustavo Henrique has five goals and two assists in 65 games (61 as a starter). Last year, he was one of the pillars of the team’s surge in the last Brasileirão and was a starter – from the knockout stage onwards – in the conquest of the 2025 Paulista Championship, against Palmeiras, in Itaquera.
