Corinthians sacked head coach Dorival Júnior on Sunday night after a 1-0 home loss to Internacional in the 10th round of the Campeonato Brasileiro. The decision was confirmed soon after full time at Neo Química Arena, with football executive Marcelo Paz explaining why.
Paz said the call was taken with president Osmar Stabile, and he thanked Dorival for his work and trophies. He said the internal view was that the project had reached its limit, with no clear prospect of technical improvement.
The change comes amid the team’s worst spell of the season, nine matches without a win. Paz cited falling collective levels, attacking struggles and home defeats, even after longer training blocks during the international break and following the Paulista exit.
He described a frank conversation with Dorival, who, he said, understood the context. According to Paz, the side were no longer reproducing training work on the pitch and showed signs of anxiety, so a respectful but necessary reset was judged required.
Paz called for an immediate upturn, recalling a strong start and the Supercopa do Brasil win over Flamengo before performances dipped. He framed the change as central to rebuilding confidence among players and supporters.
Corinthians have begun the search for a new coach and want an appointment quickly, aiming to have the new staff in place before facing Platense. Under-20 coach William Batista takes interim charge.
The team visit Platense on Thursday at Estadio Coliseo de Victoria for their Copa Libertadores group-stage opener, a chance to respond swiftly under pressure for results.
