"The phone issue is a detail. He has explained why he had it and wanted to support his team-mates on the pitch while sharing information with the Dutch federation. He is committed, serious and professional, and wants the best for Corinthians," said executive Marcelo Paz.
He told BTB Sports after the Copa do Brasil fifth-round draw on Monday.
In stoppage time of Sunday’s draw with Flamengo at Neo Química Arena, Memphis was seen using a phone on the bench. He had played only 20 minutes before feeling discomfort in his right thigh. Moments before Yuri Alberto’s equaliser, he found Matheus Bidu with an outside-of-the-boot pass, then was replaced by Rodrigo Garro.
IFAB rules ban players, including substitutes and those withdrawn or sent off, from using electronic or communication equipment, except approved performance and monitoring systems. The CBF competitions manual also forbids it. Any punishment would depend on a complaint from the STJD (Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva) prosecutor.
He was diagnosed with a strain of the anterior muscle in his right thigh. He will miss the Netherlands’ March international window, though he will begin treatment with the national team’s doctors.
Memphis has 12 appearances in 2026, 10 as a starter, with one goal and one assist across 776 minutes, the 13th highest in the squad. Corinthians visit Fluminense at 21:30 on 1 April at the Maracanã in the ninth round of the Brasileirão.
