Corinthians forward Kayke has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in his left knee and faces a lengthy lay-off.
The club said in a statement that scans on Wednesday 22 April confirmed the ACL rupture, and medical staff have begun protocols to define treatment and plan his recovery.
Such injuries typically require nine to 12 months for full healing, so he is expected to miss the rest of the season.
Kayke was hurt during Tuesday’s Copa do Brasil win over Barra in Florianópolis. He felt severe knee pain in the first half and was substituted in tears.
The 21-year-old had been on an upward curve, starting five straight matches since Fernando Diniz took charge. He had already scored against Platense in the Copa Libertadores opener, and Diniz had publicly praised his progress after first being impressed when Kayke faced his Vasco da Gama team last year.
He now joins a crowded treatment room that includes Memphis Depay, sidelined by a right anterior thigh muscle injury, and Gui Negão with a grade two strain in the posterior thigh of the same area. Hugo Souza, João Pedro Tchoca, Hugo Farias and Charles are also in recovery.
Without Kayke, Diniz can turn to Vitinho, Dieguinho, Kaio César and Pedro Raul alongside Yuri Alberto for Sunday’s Campeonato Brasileiro meeting with Vasco da Gama at 16:00, with the venue dependent on Friday’s STJD appeal over Derby sanctions.
