Corinthians legend honoured by club on his 77th birthday

On the night of this Thursday (5th), Corinthians is facing Capivariano at the Neo Química Arena, for the sixth round of the first phase of the 2026 Paulista Championship. At this moment, the Alvinegro occupies seventh place in the overall standings with eight points (two wins, two draws, and one loss – six goals scored and five conceded).

Before the match began, the club from Parque São Jorge paid tribute to the idol and former midfielder Basílio, who turned 77 last Wednesday (4th). His age coincides with the year of a memorable Corinthians title: the 1977 Paulista Championship. That year, ‘Pé de Anjo’ was responsible for scoring the goal that secured the state championship trophy for Timão, against Ponte Preta, at Morumbi, with almost 150,000 people in attendance. At the time, Alvinegro had gone 23 years without lifting a trophy.

Right after Corinthians’ warm-up, Basílio went onto the Neo Química Arena pitch together with his family, was greeted by the Fiel Torcida, and received a plaque from Rafael Castilho, director of the club’s cultural department, celebrating his age associated with the memorable 1977 title. The Arena’s big screen also showed memorable moments from when he wore the Corinthians jersey.

As the teams entered the field, the fans unfurled a giant banner in his honor, proving the deep connection he has built with the club from Parque São Jorge. Basílio will also take part in activities with Fiel Torcedor members, who redeemed the chance to experience a moment alongside the Corinthians idol through the Universo SCCP app.

Throughout his time at Corinthians, Basílio played 253 matches (222 as a starter), with 128 wins, 67 draws, and 58 losses – almost a 60% success rate, scoring 29 goals between March 1975 and March 1981. In addition, he won the following titles with Alvinegro: Paulista Championship (1977 and 1979) and the Governor of the State Cup (1977).
