Corinthians v Grêmio: Sunday’s clash steeped in history and taboos

On the afternoon of this Sunday, November 2, Corinthians will face Grêmio at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship. At the moment, Alvinegro occupies the tenth position with 39 points (10 wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 32 goals scored and 35 conceded).

Throughout history, the record between the teams is balanced. The first match between Corinthians and Grêmio took place in December 1947, when Alvinegro won 1-0 in Rio Grande do Sul, in a friendly match. Since then, there have been 103 games, with 35 Corinthians victories, 32 draws, and 36 Grêmio wins – 109 goals scored and 124 conceded.

Despite the slight disadvantage, Corinthians boasts a long unbeaten streak against Grêmio, as they have not lost to their opponent since December 2, 2018, when they were defeated 1-0 in the last round of that year’s Brazilian Championship. Since then, the teams have faced each other 13 times – in Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil matches – with three wins and 10 draws.

In Brasileirão matches, the record is also slightly favorable to Grêmio, as Corinthians has 27 wins, 21 draws, and 30 losses – 79 goals scored and 95 conceded. The top scorer for Corinthians in the history of this matchup is former midfielder Marcelinho Carioca – who made history at Alvinegro in the 1990s – scoring nine goals in 20 games against the team from Rio Grande do Sul.

Considering matches at Neo Química Arena, Corinthians and Grêmio have faced each other 12 times, with two wins for the Parque São Jorge club, nine draws, and one defeat. In official matches, Alvinegro has not beaten Grêmio in Itaquera since the end of 2014, when they won 1-0 with a goal by Paolo Guerrero.

In 2018, the two teams played a friendly at the Arena – during the break for the Russia World Cup, and Corinthians won 2-1 – goals by Marquinho Gabriel and Matheus Matias. Regarding official matches, from 2014 to now, there have been 10 games between the two in Itaquera, with nine draws and one Grêmio victory.

In the last 2024 season, Corinthians and Grêmio faced each other four times, with three draws and one Corinthians win. In the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, a goalless draw at Neo Química Arena and at Couto Pereira. In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Hugo Souza was decisive and helped Alvinegro secure a spot in the quarterfinals. In the first round of the Brasileirão, a 2-2 draw. In the last round of the national competition, a resounding 3-0 victory for the Parque São Jorge club, crowning their run toward the preliminary phase of the 2025 Libertadores.

This year, only one match so far. In the first round of the Brazilian Championship – 12th round, at Grêmio’s Arena – a 1-1 draw, with a goal by midfielder Breno Bidon.
