Corinthians win appeal against STJD, fans allowed for Paulistão opener

Corinthians will be authorized to count on the support of their fans in the opening match of the 2026 Paulista Championship. The match takes place this Sunday at 4 pm, against Ponte Preta, at Neo Química Arena. The information was initially published by Meu Timão and later confirmed by Central do Timão.

The alvinegro club succeeded in the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) by overturning the decision of the same court that had suspended the release previously granted by the TJD-SP. The punishment was related to infractions recorded in the second match of the 2025 Paulistão final, against Palmeiras, when flares and fireworks were used and thrown onto the pitch.

Throughout Friday, Corinthians worked intensely behind the scenes to try to overturn the ban and managed to secure the presence of the Fiel in the stands. Despite this, the organized supporters groups remain punished and will not be allowed to enter the stadium with banners, musical instruments, or clothing referencing the groups.

In October 2025, the STJD had determined that Corinthians would play the first round of the 2026 Paulistão without fans, in addition to closing the North Sector in the following match, a space traditionally occupied by the organized groups. This decision, however, was reviewed by the São Paulo Sports Justice Court at the beginning of this year, once again allowing fans to attend the club's matches.

With the clearance confirmed, Timão kicks off their campaign in the Paulista Championship and the 2026 season this Sunday, against Ponte Preta. The match will also feature a tribute to Ángel Romero, who officially said goodbye to the club at the end of 2025. The tribute will follow the same format as recent tributes to Renato Augusto and Gil, with a trophy display, a speech by the player, and a video shown on the big screen.

The Paraguayan striker had his contract end on December 31 and will not remain at Parque São Jorge. He ends his journey with Corinthians with 377 matches played, becoming the foreigner with the most appearances in the club's history. In total, there were 175 wins, 99 draws, and 103 losses, as well as six titles: the Paulista Championships of 2017, 2018, and 2025, the Brazilian Championships of 2015 and 2017, and the 2025 Copa do Brasil.
