Corinthians’ win: midfielder leads, Hugo Souza and Matheuzinho inspire

Corinthians defeated Atlético-MG 1-0 on the night of last Saturday, October 18, at Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 29th round of the Brazilian Championship. The Corinthians goal was scored by midfielder Maycon. With the win, the Corinthians team jumped to 11th place with 36 points (nine wins, nine draws, and 11 losses – 31 goals scored and 35 conceded).

A little over a day after the match, Corinthians released the behind-the-scenes footage—a video of just over 12 minutes—of the victory. The first flashes show the goal scored by midfielder Maycon from various angles, as well as the arrival of the coaching staff and athletes in the locker room. Before the match, midfielder Raniele was honored for reaching 100 games wearing the Corinthians shirt, and coach Dorival Júnior for his 1,000 matches throughout his career.

In the players' huddle in the locker room shortly before taking the field, goalkeeper Hugo Souza highlighted the need for the team to secure the three points to improve their position in the standings, as it was a six-point game: “Responsibility within the game, doing what we trained, everything that was said, and today there is no other result. However it happens, if it doesn't work with the ball, then with grit, with fight, whatever it takes. There is no other result, we have to leave here victorious,” he stated.

Right at the start of the match, the big screens at Neo Química Arena showed the penalty shootout from the final of the Conmebol Women's Libertadores between Corinthians and Deportivo Cali, from Colombia, held in Argentina. The footage highlights the excitement of the fans after the decisive penalty taken by the young striker Jhonson, 19 years old.

After the final whistle, the celebration of several Corinthians players was shown, such as goalkeeper Hugo Souza, left-back Matheus Bidu, and midfielder Maycon. In the locker room huddle, right-back Matheuzinho emphasized the three points and stated that the team needs to string together a good sequence of results to aim for higher positions in the Brasileirão and gain momentum for the Copa do Brasil semifinal against Cruzeiro.

“It was a very tough loss (against Santos) where we knew we would face a desperate opponent hungry for victory, we talked about it, anyway, but today we set a goal and that goal was victory. Thank God we achieved it and, as I said at the beginning, we had to bring the energy up so we can turn our key, so we can get several wins, and this win is very important for our turning point, so we can finish this competition at the highest possible level and reach the Copa do Brasil at the highest level of football that football deserves,” he commented.

Finally, defender Cacá spoke to Corinthians TV about his performance as a starter and the unity of the group, highlighting the importance of the three points to keep climbing the table: “The happiness is enormous to be playing, to be on the field, to help the team, even more so with the victory. It was a great match by the whole group, everyone played together—those who started and those who came on during the game. Everyone focused, everyone helping each other, everyone competing, and that's how together we will build not just a great team, but a family. Together we will achieve our goal for the year. And that's it: keep fighting, keep battling, everyone focused, without letting up.”

Midfielder Maycon, who scored the goal, was asked about the goal and already looked ahead to the upcoming match this weekend, October 25, at 4pm (Brasília time), against Vitória, at Barradão Stadium, for the 30th round of the Brasileirão.

“I'm happy, I think our team played a great game. I think things, when our team is this focused, flow and get better. I'm happy with the goal, glory to God for that. Now it's about continuing the work, because our team knows we need to evolve. We need to maintain balance. God willing, in the next match we can show a result again so that we gain confidence to put in great performances for the rest of the season,” he concluded.
