Lothar Matthäus sees Josko Gvardiol as the ideal reinforcement for the Bayern defense. The record international provides new arguments for a possible transfer

The discussions surrounding the possible signing of Josko Gvardiol by FC Bayern continue unabated. After Lothar Matthäus revealed a few weeks ago that the Munich club had made enquiries about the Croatian international, the record international has now spoken out again – and emphasized the qualities of the Manchester City star

Matthäus spoke about the 24-year-old when asked by FCBinside during a promotional event for collectible card manufacturer Topps in Munich. For the former Bayern professional, Gvardiol would be an ideal addition to the German record champions‘ defense

„It’s the position of left-back, Gvardiol can also play in the center, so you would have a flexible player who can play in two positions in defense,“ Matthäus explained

The Croatian’s versatility has been one of his greatest strengths for years. At RB Leipzig, Gvardiol has already been deployed at both right-back and left-back. At Manchester City, he is also regularly deployed in both positions and is one of the most important defensive players in the squad

It has recently become known that FC Bayern are keeping a close eye on the defender’s situation. According to reports from Croatia, Gvardiol is open to a new challenge after the World Cup. At the same time, Manchester City want to keep the defender for the long term and are apparently preparing an improved contract offer

For Matthäus, a transfer would mean far more than just adding quality to the squad. The 1990 world champion sees Gvardiol as an important building block for more stability in the Munich back line

„I believe that he could ultimately be a building block to make the defence so stable. We’ve been a bit critical of that. Especially in the Champions League, we conceded too many goals because everyone was thinking very offensively,“ Matthäus emphasized

At the same time, the former Bayern captain is convinced that Gvardiol would fit in perfectly with the record champions‘ style of play: „That will continue to be FC Bayern’s style. But with Gvardiol, we would have someone who has learned to play defense, who has experience, who knows the Bundesliga and also has his strengths in offense.“

However, a potential transfer remains complicated. Manchester City are still said to be demanding around 90 million euros for the Croatian international, a sum that would represent an enormous investment even for FC Bayern.
