Spurs captain says the club are in a difficult moment
Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has described Saturday’s defeat to West Ham as a “disaster” for the club.
Romero looked to have snatched a point for Spurs when he equalised midway through the second half, but Callum Wilson struck in the 93rd minute to leave Thomas Frank on the brink of the sack.
There were more boos at full-time as Spurs’ wretched home form continued against a West Ham side fighting for their lives at the bottom of the Premier League table.
With a quick turnaround before Spurs entertain Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday, there is little time for Frank’s side to lament their latest defeat, and Romero insists that attention will turn sharply towards their midweek encounter with the Bundesliga side.
"In this moment, we need to stay together, work hard, come back tomorrow to the training ground. It's a disaster in this moment for us,” Romero told Spurs' in house-media.
"Thank you to the fans for always staying with us. Tomorrow we will train in silence, work hard again, midweek we have another big match.”
Spurs started well, but found themselves behind against the run of play as Crysencio Summerville’s deflected effort wrong-footed Guglielmo Vicario.
They rallied in the second half and equalised through Romero’s header in the 64th minute.
However, Wilson’s strike made it eight defeats in 14 for Frank, and Romero admits the club are in a difficult moment.
"At this moment this is a disaster for us. We played sometimes good, sometimes bad. We must work hard and go again.
"Its' a difficult moment for us. We are not the best on the pitch.
“But Champions League, we have another big opportunity to maybe win and go to top-eight and go to the next round. That’s the most important thing.”
Asked if there needed to be an improvement in the performances or the desire on show, Romero disagreed. He replied: No, the performance is good but [we still] lose the game.
“Difficult and now we have to stay together.”
