Barcelona are interested in signing a new central defender this summer, although it is not currently high on their list of priorities. For the moment, the club’s sporting department are comfortable continuing with Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Gerard Martin, Andreas Christensen, Ronald Araujo and even Jules Kounde as options, although that could change in the coming weeks.
Going into the summer, it was believed that centre-back would be one of the priorities for Barcelona due to it being an area where they struggled during last season’s Champions League. They have money to spend after returning to La Liga’s 1:1 rule, although the preference has been to strengthen Hansi Flick’s attacking options, which is why Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have come in – and also why a new number nine will also arrive.
One of the central defenders on Barcelona’s radar is Cristian Romero, who will leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer. However, the 2026 World Cup runner-up could soon be out of reach for the Catalans, with Inter Milan pushing hard to sign him as soon as possible – although the player himself is working to ensure that he ends up at the Spotify Camp Nou instead.
According to Gianluigi Longari, Inter have reached an agreement in principle with Spurs to sign Romero, although a deal will not be completed until Barcelona make their stance clear. The player is waiting for the La Liga champions to enter the bidding, and he will continue to stall until he knows whether a move o Catalonia is a realistic possibility for him.
