Reports originating from Transfer Feed indicate Palace are now pushing hard for the 22-year-old Northern Ireland international. Speculation reached its peak when Charles was left out of Southampton’s opening pre-season friendly against Eastleigh. TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook confirmed on social media that Fulham and Palace have both registered their interest alongside Leeds. That poses a massive problem for Daniel Farke. Leeds United have already seen two formal offers knocked back by Saints, who are digging their heels in for a fee between £25 million and £30 million.

The European pull at Selhurst Park

Palace hold a massive trump card here. Having lifted the UEFA Conference League trophy last term, they bagged themselves a spot in the Europa League. That continental ticket gives the Eagles a huge advantage at the negotiating table.

At 22, the chance to play Thursday nights in Europe is a serious lure for a young player with high ambitions. Leeds United simply cannot match that pitch right now. They are back in the top flight, sure, but their immediate focus is survival and consolidation rather than European nights.

What Charles brings to the table

Missing out on Charles would bite. His performances during the 2025/26 Championship campaign proved he can run matches from central areas. He managed six goals and two assists across 38 appearances for a Southampton side that ultimately missed out on promotion amidst the controversy of the revived Spygate scandal.

Sky Sports numbers highlight exactly why top-flight scouts are queuing up. Charles averaged 2.1 tackles per 90 minutes, ranking second across the entire Southampton squad. Even better was his engine: he recorded 5.7 ball recoveries per 90, top of the pile for Saints.

His physical bite and ability to regain possession fit Farke’s high-intensity pressing scheme perfectly. International boss Michael O’Neill has publicly raved about Charles, pointing out his rare capacity to simply overpower opponents when driving through central pitch areas.

Yet Leeds United need to keep cool heads. Getting dragged into a financial arm-wrestle would be foolish. Farke is hardly short on midfield options as things stand. Ethan Ampadu has committed his future to the club, while Ao Tanaka, Ilia Gruev, and Anton Stach provide plenty of reliable coverage in the middle.

Charles is a cracking prospect, but he is not an irreplaceable target. Spending £30 million on a single player when the squad still needs reinforcing elsewhere carries real danger for a newly promoted outfit.

If the bidding ticks past £27 million, the board at Elland Road ought to shut down talks immediately. Plenty of comparable talent exists across European leagues for a fraction of that cost, and overpaying just to beat Palace to a signature makes zero financial sense.
