Crystal Palace travel to Tyneside this afternoon, desperately searching for a result to end their six-match winless streak.
Oliver Glasner’s men have hit a difficult run of form, picking up just one point from their last four league outings. Facing a venue where they have historically struggled, the Eagles must find a way to break their scoring drought against a Newcastle side that has become a “bogey” opponent in recent years.
Despite the recent slump, the South London club made headlines this week with the club-record signing of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham for £35 million. Now, Glasner will be hoping the Wales international can provide the creative spark needed to ignite an attack that has been shut out in four consecutive meetings with the Magpies.
Oliver Glasner is managing a “survival mode” squad as injuries and international absences take their toll. The Eagles are missing star defender Daniel Muñoz and midfield anchor Cheick Doucouré, while Ismaïla Sarr is currently representing Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations. Additionally, Chris Richards and Eddie Nketiah are likely to miss out again with foot and muscle injuries, respectively, and Will Hughes faces a late fitness test after being withdrawn early against Fulham.
The main headline for Palace is the availability of Brennan Johnson, who signed a contract until 2030 and is expected to be part of the travelling squad. In midfield, Adam Wharton and Jaydee Canvot will likely be tasked with controlling the tempo, while Tyrick Mitchell continues at left-back after a busy performance in the midweek draw. Jean-Philippe Mateta, who leads the club with eight goals this season, will once again be the focal point of the attack as Palace look to claim their first win at St. James’ Park since 2021.
Crystal Palace predicted XI: Henderson; Lerma, Lacroix, Guéhi; Clyne, Wharton, Canvot, Mitchell; Devenny, Pino; Mateta
The Premier League fixture takes place at St. James’ Park on Sunday, 4 January 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 GMT.
