Cuenca and Recoleta draw 2-2, Santos still control route to last 16 | OneFootball

Deportivo Cuenca and Recoleta drew 2-2 in Ecuador on Tuesday night in the Copa Sudamericana’s Group D fifth round at Estádio Alejandro Serrano Aguilar. According to Diario Do Peixe, the result leaves Santos needing only their own results to top the group and reach the last 16.

San Lorenzo remain top on six points, level with Deportivo Cuenca. Recoleta sit third on five, with Santos bottom on three and still without a win.

If Santos win both of their remaining matches, they would move to nine points and could not be caught by Deportivo Cuenca or Recoleta. San Lorenzo could also finish on nine with a final-day victory over Recoleta, but head-to-head is the first tiebreaker. In that scenario, Santos would have a win and a draw against the Argentines and would qualify.

A draw on Wednesday would already end Santos’ hopes of direct passage. That result would put San Lorenzo on seven and Santos on four, and with San Lorenzo facing Recoleta in the final round, one of them would reach at least eight, beyond Cuca’s side.

Santos could still chase second place and a play-off against a Libertadores club even if they lose on Wednesday. They would need San Lorenzo to avoid defeat in Argentina in the last round, and to beat Cuenca by more than one goal in their final game.
