Real Madrid defenders Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao suffered injuries during the 5-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid yesterday.

Militao drew an unfortunate kick on his left ankle from Alexander Sorloth early in the game, which forced him off the field at half-time. The Brazilian was replaced by Raul Asencio.

Carvajal was taken off at the hour mark after sustaining a potential soleus injury, with Eduardo Camavinga replacing him.

Both defenders will undergo medical tests today to determine the extent of their injuries, though they are likely to miss Tuesday’s Champions League away clash against Kairat.

It deepens the injury woes in Madrid’s defence, with Antonio Rudiger and Trent Alexander-Arnold already sidelined with hamstring issues.

Caravajal and Militao returned to action earlier this season after missing a large chunk of the 2024/25 season with ACL injuries.

Xabi Alonso saw his six-match winning streak in La Liga ended by Atletico.

Madrid had the upper hand until around the end of half-time with a 2-1 lead before Diego Simeone’s side mounted a monumental comeback. Julian Alvarez’s brace and goals from Alexander Sorloth and Antoine Griezmann sunk the visitors.

Alonso will be left short-handed in the right-back position. Asencio and Federico Valverde are potential options to fill in the role.

Meanwhile, Alvaro Carreras and David Alaba will come in handy to partner Dean Huijsen in the central defence after Militao’s injury.

Carreras, who is a natural left-back, produced a sensational performance as a make-shift centre-back in the 4-1 win against Levante.

Real Madrid are at the top of the La Liga table with 18 points, but Barcelona can leapfrog them if they win against Real Sociedad tonight.
