Daniel Farke says any booing aimed at the Ramadan pause would be unacceptable, but he believes most Leeds United fans did not realise why play stopped during Saturday’s match against Man City at Elland Road.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, a sunset pause had been anticipated, and referee Peter Bankes halted play at an opportune moment. Players from both sides went to the touchline for brief talks, some asked what was happening, and loud boos followed.

Some supporters thought it echoed Pep Guardiola’s tactical huddle in the first meeting of the teams, and many in the South Stand could not see the big-screen message. There was also anger from a number of fans directed at the reason for the stoppage. Beyond a Friday report, neither club issued guidance to match-going supporters about a potential pause.

Farke’s sense during the game was that the break surprised many and that the jeers stemmed from a belief City were orchestrating another time out, particularly after Leeds had started strongly. He does not think the reaction targeted the Ramadan element, and he was unsure how many noticed the screen message.

He added that if any jeers were rooted in disrespect, that would be unacceptable, especially at a club with a multicultural dressing room. Football, he said, shows how people of different passports and religions can work together in support of the same cause.

Farke concluded that anyone booing out of disrespect should learn from it, though his initial feeling was that many simply did not know the sun had set and a short break was taking place.
