Leeds United should not have had to face Brentford without Gabriel Gudmundsson, after the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel unanimously ruled his dismissal at Selhurst Park was an error.

BBC reports that the panel sided with Daniel Farke over Thomas Bramall’s decision to issue a second yellow, then red, for a foul on Ismaila Sarr.

It is the second unanimous finding in a fortnight against a decision involving Leeds. Earlier in March the panel reviewed the penalty denied for Luke O’Nien’s challenge on Pascal Struijk at Elland Road, in the 1-0 defeat by Sunderland.

Farke said after the game the tackle did not merit a booking. Bramall had forgotten he had already cautioned Gudmundsson in the first half and was reminded before producing the red.

The panel considered there was only minimal contact and that the challenge was careless rather than clearly reckless. Reduced to 10 men, Leeds spent most of the second half defending and drew 0-0.

Without Gudmundsson they lacked threat down the left and struggled to create in the Brentford game, another 0-0 stalemate.

VAR cannot review second yellow cards at present, but from next season VAR officials will be able to ask referees to take another look at clearly wrong second bookings.
