UEFA has appointed Dutch referee Danny Makkelie for Porto’s Europa League trip to Nottingham Forest, with Italian Davide Massa assigned to Braga’s visit to Betis.
At the City Ground, Makkelie will be assisted by compatriots Hessel Steegstra and Jan de Vries, with Croatia’s Ivan Bebek as VAR.
Makkelie, 43, has twice overseen Porto in the 2018/19 Champions League knockouts, a 2-1 defeat at Roma in the last 16 and a 4-1 home loss to Liverpool in the quarter-finals.
Porto travel on Thursday at 20:00 to face Vítor Pereira’s Forest after a 1-1 first-leg draw, the same score Braga recorded against Betis before the tie moved to Spain.
In Seville, Massa will lead an all-Italian team, with assistants Filippo Meli and Stefano Alassio and Daniele Chiffi as VAR.
The 44-year-old has refereed Braga three times, most recently in 2021/22 when they beat Rangers 1-0 in the Europa League quarter-finals. He also handled a 2-0 home loss to Ludogorets in 2017/18 and a 2-1 win at Spartak Moscow in 2019/20.
This season Massa officiated Benfica’s 4-2 victory over Real Madrid, which secured a Champions League play-off thanks to goalkeeper Trubin’s last-gasp goal.
Portuguese official João Pinheiro will take Strasbourg v Mainz in the Europa Conference League, assisted by Bruno Jesus and Luciano Maia, with Tiago Martins as VAR. They will be at the 2026 World Cup.
