The German boss is finally set to come back to the club that he so desperately wanted to leave.

Danny Rohl is set to return to Sheffield Wednesday today (Monday 14th July) to take his first training session of pre-season, in a move that may not best please some Owls players.

While the financial fiasco that has overshadowed the past couple of months at Hillsborough has played out, the major issue facing the Owls and their manager also played out alongside it, creating a large cauldron of mess for the club to have to deal with.

Rohl made his desire to leave Wednesday clear as far back as April. Many failed attempts were made to find himself a new home, but, for one reason or another, none of the interested teams in this country or back home in Germany were willing to bite the bullet for the 36-year-old.

And now he finds himself in an awkward position, having to return to Middlewood.

According to Rob Staton, Rohl is finally due to reunite with his players and take charge of training at the start of this working week.

Despite being held in such high regard at the end of last season, Rohl's reputation among the Wednesday supporters has been dented. Not in the eyes of all, but certainly enough that there may be a weird feeling at Hillsborough if he is in charge of the first game of the season against Leicester City.

Those who worked under him, many of whom are still owed money from Dejphon Chansiri, the owner and chairman of Wednesday, returned to begin preparations for the upcoming campaign earlier this month. Meanwhile, the boss decided to try and stick it out at home.

Now that his return is imminent, it is said that a number of first-teamers don't want to see Rohl come back to lead them next term, according to The Star. Clear-the-air talks between him and the players are set to take place, as per Sky Sports, but there is no doubting that the German's obvious wish to no longer be at Hillsborough has rubbed some up the wrong way.

It was reported that a deal was being worked on to allow him to leave the club. That's now looking very unlikely.

Danny Rohl has some serious diplomacy to do once he returns to work

Bridges have most certainly been burned. His actions were always going to have consequences, but Rohl was hoping that they'd be justified by the backing of another club that was willing to get him out of his deal with the Owls, which still has two years left on it. They didn't, and now he needs to find a way to rebuild the connections that he is reported to have lost with some of his players.

You can understand why he wanted to leave, especially once the severity of the club's financial situation became well known and led to a number of embargoes, plus a three-window transfer ban.

The situation at Hillsborough is not an appealing one for any coach, but it doesn't mean that Rohl can force his way out just a year after committing his long-term future to Wednesday.
