Former Sunderland chief operating officer David Bruce is closing in on reuniting with long-serving Stadium of Light figure Oscar Chamberlain as Sheffield Wednesday continue their off-field rebuild.
Sunderland Echo understands Chamberlain has left Sunderland and is close to a move to Hillsborough, where he would rejoin Bruce after his own switch.
Bruce left earlier this year to become Wednesday chief executive after Arise Capital Partners’ takeover. He is helping drive a reset after instability under former chairman Dejphon Chansiri.
Chamberlain spent 12 years at Sunderland across branding, digital, marketing and communications, leading supporter-facing work that won awards. He is expected to take a slightly different, newly created role, not replace long-serving head of communications Trevor Braithwait, who stays in post.
The hire is part of Wednesday’s plan to strengthen senior structures under Arise Capital Partners, with further appointments expected.
Wednesday are preparing for League One and are expected to confirm Simon Wilson, formerly of Sunderland and Stockport County, as sporting director. He is believed to have already assisted early transfer and contract talks.
For Sunderland, Chamberlain’s exit is another change after a historic seventh-placed Premier League finish and Europa League qualification. Ian Taylor, formerly of Burnley, is interim head of communications, and a full-time post is being advertised.
