Chelsea Explore Xabi Alonso Appointment as Head Coach

Chelsea’s search for clarity has taken another intriguing turn, with Xabi Alonso now firmly in the frame for the head coach role at Stamford Bridge.

As reported by David Ornstein for The Athletic, “Chelsea are exploring a deal to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach.” The Spaniard is said to be “open to the possibility”, although no final decision has been made.

Xabi Alonso Emerges as Chelsea Contender

Alonso, 44, has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in January, only seven months into a three-year contract. His exit came despite winning 10 of his first 11 La Liga matches, including October’s Clasico against Barcelona.

His reputation, however, remains built on Bayer Leverkusen’s extraordinary 2023-24 campaign, when he led them to their first Bundesliga title with an unbeaten domestic season.

That achievement matters. Chelsea need more than another name. They need a coach with authority, tactical conviction and the ability to shape a young squad quickly.

Andoni Iraola Remains Strong Option

Alonso is not alone on Chelsea’s shortlist. Andoni Iraola is also described as “a strong contender”, having confirmed he will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season.

Iraola’s Bournemouth have earned admiration for their “attacking and entertaining style of play”, and his work with young players may appeal to Chelsea’s ownership.

The Athletic’s analysis notes that Bournemouth “rank high in the Premier League for shot-ending turnovers”, a sign of an aggressive, front-foot pressing game. Chelsea’s squad already profiles well for that approach.

Tactical Fit Could Appeal to Chelsea

Alonso’s best work came with a possession-dominant, high-tempo structure. His Bayer Leverkusen side became known for a dynamic 3-4-2-1 system, though he showed at Madrid that he can adapt.

The report states that his teams often used “a midfielder dropping between the centre-backs, advanced full-backs, and a box midfield to control central spaces.”

That could suit Chelsea. Their squad contains young, athletic players, technically secure midfielders and full-backs who can operate aggressively. With “one or two additions”, The Athletic’s tactical analysis suggests Chelsea have players suited to Alonso’s style.

Chelsea Must Get This Decision Right

Chelsea’s instability cannot continue. Liam Rosenior departed on April 23 after less than four months, following Enzo Maresca’s January exit. Calum McFarlane has since taken interim charge.

Alonso would bring prestige, tactical detail and a clear footballing identity. Iraola would offer Premier League familiarity, intensity and proven work with developing players.

Both make sense. Alonso feels like the bolder swing, Iraola the cleaner structural fit. Chelsea’s challenge is deciding whether they want the coach with the higher ceiling, or the one whose current body of work feels more directly transferable.

From a Chelsea fan’s point of view, this report should bring cautious excitement. Alonso may have had a bruising spell at Real Madrid, but that should not erase what he achieved at Bayer Leverkusen. An unbeaten domestic season in Germany is not a fluke. That speaks to coaching, structure, belief and elite standards.

Chelsea have spent years collecting potential. What they have lacked is a manager capable of turning that potential into a recognisable team. Alonso could be that figure. His football would give Chelsea supporters something to believe in again, especially if he can build around the technical quality already in the squad.

Iraola is a very good option too. His Bournemouth side have been brave, aggressive and entertaining. There is a strong argument that he is the safer Premier League appointment.

But Chelsea should not always play safe. Stamford Bridge needs ambition, and Alonso carries that. He has played at the highest level, coached elite players and built one of Europe’s most admired teams. If he is genuinely open to the job, Chelsea should move with purpose.
