Thomas Partey Set for Villarreal Switch: A Complex End to His Arsenal Tenure

David Ornstein of The Athletic has reported that Thomas Partey, now a free agent, is set to join Villarreal on a two-year deal running until 2027. The Ghanaian international, who recently departed Arsenal following the end of his contract in June, appears to have found his next chapter in Spain. According to the report, “the chance to continue playing Champions League football was deemed an important factor in the proposed move to Villarreal.”

At 32, Partey’s priorities are shifting. The pursuit of consistent top-level football, and perhaps some familiarity with La Liga from his time at Atletico Madrid, seem to have steered him towards the Yellow Submarine. Given Villarreal’s track record in European competitions and their relatively stable tactical structure, it is a logical move from a footballing perspective.

Arsenal Exit Closes a Mixed Chapter

Partey made 167 appearances for Arsenal after his €50 million move from Atletico Madrid in 2020, scoring nine goals and operating primarily in midfield, with occasional duties at right-back. The 2024–25 campaign was arguably his busiest, featuring 52 times under Mikel Arteta.

Despite discussions over a potential contract extension, no agreement was reached. Ornstein notes, “Partey was in talks over remaining at the Emirates Stadium but an agreement could not be reached on the terms of a deal.”

In many ways, Partey’s spell in North London was one of peaks and troughs. Technically gifted and tactically disciplined, his presence often offered Arsenal the midfield control they so sorely lacked in previous seasons. Yet injuries and inconsistency sometimes clouded his contribution. As Arsenal now move on with a younger midfield core, it’s a transition that feels mutually inevitable.

Legal Proceedings Loom Large

What complicates this transfer is the legal situation looming over Partey. As reported, “Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on July 4. He denies the charges.” This follows a lengthy investigation that began in February 2022. While he continued playing throughout that period, the timing of these charges, alongside his free agency, puts the move under increased scrutiny.

Partey is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 5. The outcome of these proceedings could significantly impact his availability and Villarreal’s decision-making moving forward. Any club acquiring a player facing such serious allegations must tread carefully, balancing legal due process with their institutional values.

Villarreal’s Calculated Risk

Villarreal’s interest likely stems from a blend of footballing need and calculated risk. On the pitch, Partey offers composure, range and experience. He can anchor the midfield or adjust into more versatile roles. However, the legal cloud hanging over him could become a long-term distraction for the club.

Arsenal, meanwhile, will face their former player almost immediately, as they host Villarreal in a pre-season friendly at the Emirates on Wednesday. It’s a poignant, if awkward, footnote to what has become a highly complex and emotionally charged exit.

Whether Partey’s time in La Liga can mirror his early days at Atletico or become a story of unwanted headlines remains to be seen. For now, his future lies back in Spain, in yellow, and under the harshest of spotlights.
