There has been speculation for a long time, but now the decision seems to have been made: Dayot Upamecano will probably stay at FC Bayern beyond the summer.

According to information from Le Parisien, the centre-back has decided to extend his contract with the German record champions. The exact details of the term are not yet known, but according to Sky, there are plans to include an exit clause in the new contract. The talks are said to have been on the home straight. Now the Frenchman has apparently given his final yes.

Club boss Jan-Christian Dreesen had already made it clear that Munich did not want to wait forever for a decision. „Upa has an offer from us, which we have also improved again. This has already been discussed several times with his advisors and now again with him himself,“ explained the Bayern boss during a fan club visit. And made it clear: „I think he should sign what he has now. Because it doesn’t get any better.“

Dreesen: „We really don’t go along with every nonsense“

FC Bayern signaled several times that there would be no further improvements. According to Dreesen, the offer is the result of sporting appreciation: „We made him an extraordinarily good offer because he has played very well for a year and a half now. He is certainly one of the best central defenders there is in the world. With him and Jonathan Tah, but also the others, we have regained stability. That’s why we want to keep him.“

The CEO also warned that the decision-making process should not be unnecessarily protracted: „The whole thing shouldn’t take so long now. I just don’t want to say an exact date now, because that will be somewhere tomorrow.“ Internally, it has long been clear that Upamecano is still part of the coach’s fixed plans.

Dreesen also had clear words to say about the club’s fundamental stance in negotiations: „We really don’t go along with every nonsense,“ said the Bayern boss. And with regard to Upamecano, he said: „If you chew a piece of gum for too long, the taste is gone at some point. That’s why it shouldn’t drag on like chewing gum.“ But now the poker finally seems to have come to an end and Bayern can plan for the long term with its central defender.
