Andrés Gómez settled it in the 88th minute with a crisp right-footed finish, sealing Vasco da Gama's 2-1 win over São Paulo at Estádio São Januário.
Gómez had threatened earlier, rattling the right post from the left side (28.), as Tricolor Paulista sat deep to protect their area. On the stroke of half time he lifted another chance over after connecting with a cross.
After the restart, his whipped delivery created a close-range opening for Cláudio Spinelli (64.). He then dragged a low effort wide from a similar pocket on the left (74.) as Gigante da Colina kept pushing.
The Colombia international ended with five attempts, two chances created and three accurate crosses from nine, plus eight touches in the box and two tackles won. That mix of direct running and final ball kept Soberano pinned back before his late winner.
With Vasco's wide rotations freeing him on the left, Gómez repeatedly attacked the blind side. Late on, he arrived to lash into the top left after Brenner's lay-off, the decisive act for Vasco.
Vasco climb from 13th to ninth. Tricolor Paulista drop from third to fourth. Vasco visit Paysandu in the Copa do Brasil next, while Tricolor Paulista host Juventude in the same competition.
