FC Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, addressed on Sunday the absence of Lamine Yamal, one of the brightest talents in the squad, for the game against Valencia.
The winger missed the match due to discomfort that was exacerbated during the international break while he was away with the Spanish national team.
Lamine had linked up with La Roja while carrying some minor discomfort, but was still forced to play more than 150 minutes across two games.
The situation angered Hansi Flick, who spoke his mind about the youngster’s mismanagement by Spain before Sunday’s game vs Valencia.
Echoing the words of Flick, Deco delivered a note of caution regarding the management of young footballers on international duty, speaking through the club’s media channels.
“National team call-ups are always complicated. Players often come back injured. I agree with the manager: communication and protocols need to be improved,” said Deco.

Deco highlighted the forward’s importance both for Flick’s plans and for Barça’s future, while also acknowledging his role for Spain, stating that he should be looked after with greater care.
“Footballers are under a lot of pressure and we need to improve. He is an important player for us and for the national team, and we all need to be careful,” the Barcelona sporting director remarked.
Barcelona played their first home game of the season after three matches on the road and Deco welcomed the occasion, especially with it coming after the international break.
“The breaks are always long. Having a home match always feels good to play at home again,” Deco concluded.
