Eintracht Frankfurt were beaten 4-0 by Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Sunday evening.
Bayern created the better chances before the interval but couldn’t find a way past a resolute Eagles rearguard until first-half stoppage time, when Michael Olise broke the deadlock from Leroy Sané’s delivery. Hiroki Ito’s close-range finish left Eintracht with a mountain to climb, before late goals from Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry compounded the Eagles’ woes. Dino Toppmöller’s side stay third but sit just three points above SC Freiburg after Matchday 23, with a tricky home match against Bayer Leverkusen coming up next weekend.
Knauff and Bahoya come in
Eintracht head coach Toppmöller made two alterations to the side that started last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Holstein Kiel. Ansgar Knauff and Jean-Mattéo Bahoya replaced Nathaniel Brown and Mario Götze, who had to settle for a place among the substitutes.
Eagles undone late in first half
Bayern and Eintracht have been scoring goals for fun this season, and both sides could have taken an early lead in an entertaining opening at the Allianz Arena. Hugo Ekitiké flashed a shot wide with just six minutes on the clock, while the Eagles were indebted to Rasmus Kristensen for blocking Musiala’s shot on the goal-line with a quarter of an hour gone.
The home side began to turn the screw as the first half went on. Olise had a low shot parried away by Eagles goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, who was equal to a speculative Thomas Müller effort on the half-hour mark. Musiala was a whisker away from getting on the end of Müller’s low cross moments later, but Eintracht’s defence was finally breached when Sané collected Musiala’s pass before squaring for Olise to slide past Trapp from point-blank range.
No way back for Eintracht
Winter signing Elye Wahi, who was introduced at half-time alongside Ellyes Skhiri, steered an Ekitiké cross just off target in a bright start to the second half by Toppmöller’s charges, before a brilliant block by Nnamdi Collins prevented Sané from doubling Bayern’s advantage at the other end. The home side did eventually make it 2-0 just after the hour-mark, Ito pouncing on a loose ball inside the area and firing into the roof of the net.
Bayern remained on the front foot after Ito’s strike, Sané shooting wide in a one-on-one after robbing Skhiri of the ball inside the Eagles’ half. Musiala put the result beyond doubt eight minutes from time, wriggling past Tuta and Kristensen before firing low into the far corner, and there was still time for Gnabry to get on the scoresheet from a tight angle as Vincent Kompany’s team consolidated their place at the Bundesliga summit.
