Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo has reportedly made up his mind about his future, insisting he wants to stay at the club.

The 19-year-old is an academy product of the Red Devils who had his major breakthrough last season under the tutelage of Erik ten Hag. He even rounded off a superb campaign on a personal level by scoring in the FA Cup final victory over Man City, and has been hailed for his ‘fantastic’ personality.

However, this season has been a bit more challenging for the England international, especially following the arrival of Ruben Amorim who has been trying him in several positions. Aside from his original role as a central midfielder, Mainoo acted as an attacking midfielder, and even as a False 9 on one occasion.

Moreover, his contract situation raised some question marks over his future, with some reports claiming INEOS are struggling to tie him down with a long-term.

Nevertheless, TalkSport Chief Football Correspondent Alex Crook plays down exit talks, insisting Mainoo is keen to stay at Carrington, but it’s only a matter of finding the right formula for a renewal.

“There were some stories doing the rounds yesterday that Mainoo is not happy with the financial package on offer to try and persuade him to sign a new deal at Manchester United,” said Crook during his appearance on TalkSport.

“I’m told some of the figures being banded around in terms of his demands, maybe are a little excessive €180k a week was quoted. I think it’s nearer £150k a week, but again, this is a sign that Manchester United are trying to trim the wage bill. We know when Ahmad Diallo signed his new deal, it was only, and I say only in inverted commas, 100 grand a week, but that is obviously a lot less than United historically have paid.

“Mainoo is an academy product, someone who loves the football club. He wants to stay at Manchester United, but it’s just a case of coming to an agreement, read the terms, and obviously there is also this PSR issue that United may have to tackle this summer.”

Nevertheless, the journalist confirms Chelsea would be keen to sign Mainoo if given the opportunity.

“If Man Utd were to sell Mainoo we know Chelsea would be interested. United would make a hundred percent profit, and again for me, this is where the PSR system falls down.

“I don’t think clubs should be encouraged to cash in on the players who come through their academy. These are the players that as football fans we want to see flourish in the first team.
