Dennis Cirkin has undergone surgery on a long-term wrist problem, sharing hospital pictures after Sunderland’s historic season.
The defender said in a post that he was on the mend. He shared an image from his hospital bed with his arm in a sling and another of metalwork removed during the procedure, writing: "Metal out, on the mend #wristtape4life."
The 24-year-old was on the bench against Chelsea as a final-day win at the Stadium of Light sealed European football for the first time since 1973-74. The wrist issue has persisted since last season in the Championship, and he wore protection for an extended spell.
In another injury-hit campaign, he made eight Premier League appearances. Sunderland finished seventh to book a place in the Europa League.
Cirkin remains a fans’ favourite after helping the club climb from League One to the Premier League. He joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 and was part of Alex Neil’s promotion winners.
His future is uncertain this summer, with his contract situation one to watch as Sunderland plan for Premier League and Europa League commitments.
