Depay scores off the bench, speaks on passport issue

Even after returning from injury, striker Memphis Depay was called up by the Netherlands national team for this FIFA window, during which two matches will be played for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. Last Thursday, the 9th, he came on to face Malta and scored the fourth goal of the match.

In his last game for Corinthians, Depay played only 17 minutes due to his post-injury rhythm. He also wasn’t a starter in the most recent challenge, coming on only in the second half and playing for 23 minutes. Even so, he managed to find the net for the 53rd time in his national team’s history.

After the match, he recalled the case of his lost passport, which delayed his trip to represent the Netherlands. “It wasn’t anywhere, so I assume it was stolen, because in 12 years with the Dutch national team, this has never happened before. I had to apply for an emergency passport and then another one to fly to Malta. Unfortunately, this is a waste of energy. I’m happy I was able to connect so quickly,” said the player in an interview with the national team’s press office.

Memphis Depay’s next match in the Qualifiers will take place next Sunday, October 12. The match is a direct clash against Finland, who are also fighting for a spot in the 2026 World Cup. The ball will roll from 1pm (Brasília time).
