In recent days the second edition of the Derbi de las Américas was played, a tournament created to replace the old Copa Interamericana between the Copa Libertadores and CONCACAF champions. According to Americayya.net, it revives the intercontinental rivalry across the Americas.

The Copa Interamericana was first staged in 1969, with its final edition in 1998. The Club World Cup followed, initially sporadic, then held without interruption from 2005 to 2023.

From there, FIFA moved to remodel the Club World Cup into a 32-team tournament every four years. In parallel, the Copa Intercontinental returned, replacing the previous Club World Cup format while awarding more trophies.

First comes the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup between those regional champions, and on the other side sits the Derbi de las Américas, which takes the place of the Copa Interamericana. The winners then play for the Copa Challenger, before meeting Europe’s champions for the Copa Intercontinental.

All-time leading winners: Independiente three titles; Club América, Nacional and Atlético Nacional two; Olimpia, Argentinos Juniors, Estudiantes, River Plate, Vélez, D.C. United, Colo Colo, Flamengo, Pachuca, Pumas and Universidad Católica one.
