Derby County and Sheffield United have missed the boat on a £4 million deal with Plymouth Argyle, with Bristol City pouncing on the deal instead...
Sheffield United and Derby County will both head into the 2026/27 Championship campaign with genuine aspirations of competing towards the top end of the table.
For the Blades, the expectation will once again be to challenge for automatic promotion after retaining much of the quality that made them such a force in recent seasons. Derby County, meanwhile, appear to be building steadily under John Eustace and will believe they are capable of taking another large step forward after more than establishing themselves back in the second tier.
The introduction of two additional play-off places only strengthens that belief for both clubs, with Derby finishing there last season and Sheffield United coming up just short. Finishing inside the top eight now offers a route to promotion, making the race even more competitive and providing ambitious clubs with greater incentive to invest wisely.
Recruitment, therefore, could prove more important than ever, with every addition potentially making the difference between extending the season into the play-offs or falling just short. That is why missing out on players with the potential to be high-quality Championship-calibre players can be so frustrating.

Both Sheffield United and Derby have been linked with a number of exciting attacking options this summer, but not every target will end up arriving. Sometimes the market moves quickly, meaning clubs are left reflecting on opportunities that slipped away before they could act.
One player who now appears to fall into that category is Plymouth Argyle striker Lorent Tolaj. It's stated that Bristol City have agreed a deal worth around £4 million to sign Tolaj from Plymouth. It follows on from the 24-year-old's outstanding campaign with Plymouth in League One.
After arriving at Home Park only a year ago from Port Vale, Tolaj quickly established himself as one of League One's most dangerous attacking players. His 21 goals and eight assists in 35 games for the Pilgrims underline that he is simply too good for the third tier. Beyond that, his movement, intelligent link-up play, and composure in front of goal made him a constant threat.
His age means he also fits the profile of a player with significant room for further development, making him an attractive long-term investment rather than simply a short-term solution for the extensive list of second tier clubs keen on his services. That includes both Derby and Millwall registering interest in Tolaj.
On top of that, Sheffield United, Leicester City, and Preston North End were keen on Tolaj. It's a huge coup for Bristol City and Michael Skubala, with the Robins already adding the likes of Sam Tickle, Gibson Yah, Lisav Naif Eissat, and Sam Greenwood this summer. Like Tolaj, they are all under the age of 25.
For clubs like Sheffield United and Derby, he could have represented a superb piece of business. Chris Wilder's side are always looking to add more quality and competition in the final third after releasing Danny Ings, while Derby continue searching for players capable of raising their attacking ceiling after the long-term injury blow to Patrick Agyemang.
As they look to establish themselves among the Championship's promotion contenders, Tolaj's profile would have suited both projects. Instead, it is Bristol City who benefit. A £4 million fee may initially appear significant for a player stepping up from League One, but the Robins are paying for far more than one productive season.

The Robins are investing in a striker entering his prime years, but also one who has already shown the technical quality and work-rate required to make the transition into the Championship. Albeit in different leagues, Tolaj has scored 58 times in three seasons for Aldershot Town, Port Vale, and Plymouth.
There are, of course, no guarantees. Plenty of prolific forwards from the National League and lower reaches of the EFL have found the step up challenging. However, Tolaj appears to possess attributes physically and technically that should translate well to the higher level, particularly his intelligence off the ball and willingness to contribute outside the penalty area.
That link up play should be huge for Bristol City, with Tolaj capable of lining up alongside Emil Riis in a front two or with the likes of Greenwood, Jed Wallace, and Scott Twine around him instead. As for the likes of Millwall, Sheffield United, and Derby, attention will now inevitably turn elsewhere.
Neither of the latter pair can afford to dwell on one missed target when there is still plenty of business to complete before the window closes. Nevertheless, if Tolaj fulfils his potential at Ashton Gate, both may look back on this summer wondering whether they allowed one of the Championship's most promising attacking additions to slip through their fingers.
