Jérôme Boateng’s possible return to FC Bayern continues to cause heated discussions. While the active fan scene and numerous supporters reject his planned stint at Säbener Straße, a recent survey shows that the majority of Bayern fans are open to the idea.

At last Saturday’s Bundesliga home match against Borussia Dortmund, parts of the fan curve made their displeasure at the former centre-back’s possible return unmistakable. During the match in the Allianz Arena, a large banner was hung with the message: „Whoever gives the offender space shares his guilt – fuck off, Boateng!“

Away from the stadium, the waves were also high: an online petition against the planned hospitalisation has now reached more than 25,000 signatures. The tenor of many participants: Boateng’s return – in whatever form – is not compatible with the club’s values.

Boateng is looking forward to work shadowing – Kompany opens the door

Nevertheless, FC Bayern is holding on to the possibility of opening the door for the 37-year-old to start his coaching career. Head coach Vincent Kompany had already expressed his openness to Boateng working as a guest coach, which triggered the discussion in the first place.

Boateng himself expressed his optimism a few days ago: „I can work at Bayern and I’m really looking forward to it. We just have to find the right time,“ said the former international, who played a total of 363 competitive matches for the record champions between 2011 and 2021 and won the treble with the club in 2020, among other honours.

Boateng’s sporting prospects are clear: he wants to get into coaching – and gain experience at his former club.

Survey shows divided, but mostly positive sentiment

A recent FanQ survey, conducted between 17 and 21 October 2025, shows a differentiated but remarkable range of opinions within the Bayern fan scene.

In response to the question „Should Jérôme Boateng be allowed to guest at FC Bayern?“, the answers were

  1. 63.9 per cent of respondents answered „Yes, he should be given the opportunity to gain a foothold as a coach“
  2. while 36.1 per cent said: „No, the incidents and events in the past are inexcusable.“

This shows that despite the vociferous protests in the stadium, a majority of FCB supporters are fundamentally in favour of a coaching stint – even if the issue remains polarising.

The online survey, in which over 4,000 people took part according to FanQ, was conducted in cooperation with FCBinside, sport.de, absolutfussball.com, merkur.de, tz.de and Abendzeitung München.

The results emphasise how emotionally charged the debate surrounding Boateng’s return to Munich is. While some fans are keeping their distance, others see it as a second chance for a player who has been one of the defining figures of Bayern’s successful years.
