The German Football Association has declined to sign the formal letter nominating Gianni Infantino for a potential third term as FIFA president.

Bild reports that DFB president Bernd Neuendorf has distanced himself from Infantino following the Folarin Balogun red card affair.

Balogun was due to be suspended for the USA’s last-16 tie with Belgium, but his dismissal was overturned at a controversial hearing.

Further outcry followed when it emerged that US President Donald Trump had telephoned Infantino about the decision.

Even so, there are currently no doubts over Infantino’s re-election, and the Italian looks destined for another four-year term in charge.

Continental federations from Africa, Asia and South America have already pledged support for him to be re-elected in March 2027.
