Pierre Kalulu’s move to Juventus has been heavily scrutinised by AC Milan fans, and today, Paolo Di Canio has offered his opinion on the move.

In the summer, it seemed like Kalulu was one of the ‘more secure’ defenders at the club, with Newcastle United making repeated attempts for Fikayo Tomori, before making a failed move for Malick Thiaw.

However, when Emerson Royal and Strahinja Pavlovic joined Milan, the Frenchman’s rank within the defence fell. No longer was there really a need for more coverage in the management’s eyes, and they opened themselves to offers.

Had the defender moved to a club other than Juventus, perhaps, the outcry would have been different – after all, the Bianconeri are a rival in several ways. With Kalulu’s high level of performance, though, it is likely that the annoyance would still be present.

Kalulu’s start to his new club has been analysed by Di Canio, and his words to Tuttosport have been relayed by Radio Rossonera.

“Giuntoli has been very good: there would be to discuss the choice of Milan, but that’s another matter. I like Kalulu because he is versatile, he is fast, he is aggressive, he is reliable. In Leipzig we saw him make 60-metre runs on the ball: he has personality, he’s won in the past.

“We’ll have to try to get Danilo back, but he’s also a bit adapted as a centre-back: the coach will have to be good there to make everyone feel important,” he stated.

“You know, now the tour de force begins and you can’t afford to have few choices, there are already injuries. And Juve’s matches so far have all seemed balanced: so you’re not a team that often goes ahead 2-0 or 3-0 and can afford to give rest to those who play more. The challenges now become almost all direct clashes.”
