Luis Díaz has seamlessly carried his strong form from FC Bayern into the World Cup. In Colombia’s 3-1 opening victory over World Cup newcomer Uzbekistan, the Bayern star was the standout player on the field and played a decisive role in two goals.
While many Bayern pros have already made headlines at the World Cup, Luis Díaz has now also impressively demonstrated why he is currently one of the most dangerous offensive players in the world.
The 29-year-old virtually single-handedly led Colombia to a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan, confirming his outstanding form this season.
In front of about 80,000 spectators at the sold-out Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Díaz was the decisive factor separating the two teams.
Colombia struggled for a long time against the courageous World Cup debutants.
Uzbekistan pressed high, played fearlessly, and remained unfazed by the impressive crowd. Coach Fabio Cannavaro’s team held their own against the favorites for a long time and repeatedly created their own offensive opportunities.
But then Luis Díaz struck.
After the Bayern star had previously hit the inside post with a precise shot, he showed his true class shortly before halftime. With a perfectly timed pass behind the defense, he set up Daniel Muñoz. The Crystal Palace pro finished with a flourish to make it 1-0 for Colombia.
Even after the break, Díaz remained the most prominent player on the field.
When Abbosbek Fayzullaev surprisingly equalized for Uzbekistan to make it 1–1 after an hour, the co-favorite to reach the Round of 16 faced an unexpected setback.
But once again, Colombia had the answer—and once again, it was Luis Díaz.
Just a few minutes after the equalizer, the attacking player was the quickest to react following a swift counterattack and set the stage for victory with his goal to make it 2–1.
In stoppage time, Jaminton Campaz finally sealed the deal.
For the Bayern star, it was yet another strong performance in what has already been an outstanding year.
Even in his debut season with the German record champions, Díaz was one of the team’s defining figures. With his dynamism, goal-scoring threat, and aggressive pressing, he quickly developed into a key player under Vincent Kompany.
Now he’s showcasing those qualities on the biggest stage in world soccer.
Particularly impressive against Uzbekistan was his ability to step up in the decisive moments. Both his assist and his goal came exactly when Colombia needed a game-changer.
With this opening victory, Colombia has taken an important step toward the knockout stage.
For Díaz personally, the World Cup could serve as another platform to cement his status as one of the world’s best attacking players. Following his strong season with FC Bayern and his successful World Cup debut, he’s likely to remain in the spotlight in the upcoming matches.
If the Colombian maintains his current form, he could not only lead his national team deep into the tournament but also further improve his chances in the race for individual awards.
